KWL charts fit in perfectly with the open, middle, and close of any lesson you teach. What is a KWL chart? It is a form of assessing:
K - What your students KNOW already about the topic (open / pre-assessment)
W - What questions your students have and WANT to know about the topic ( engaging their curiosity)
L - What your students LEARNED about what you taught them (closing / post-assessment)
KWL charts are great to use for ANY SUBJECT and provide you with valuable information that you can use to refine your lessons moving forward.
THE CHALLENGE: With distance learning, it can be a challenge to keep students engaged and in having them create timely and meaningful responses. It is recommended to incorporate GROUP DISCUSSION responses whenever possible so that students can see the live responses as you teach on Zoom/Google Meets.
When using Google Classroom, simply upload your an assignment and make sure you click the "Students can edit file" tab when you assign it to them. This will allow your students to VIEW and EDIT the exact same document. The benefits of this over assigning individually will be to allow your students to read their classmates responses and give them confidence in typing in their responses. They will be able to see when other students are have trouble with similar topics or when other students don't know anything about a given topic. The key here is to inspire truthful responses to get the most out of where your kids need improvement and areas where they don't.
Below, I am including a FREE VERSION OF 2 KWL TEMPLATES. One of them is sized to the standard paper size of 8.5" x 11" and the other is sized to the standard widescreen view on Google Classroom Slides/Powerpoint of 10" x 5.5". However, both templates can be uploaded into Google Classroom, just make sure you upload them as their own files instead of importing individual slides or else the templates will be automatically re-sized by those programs.
