HOW TO TEACH MULTIPLICATION: 3X2 DIGITS (NEW CLOUDS AND CANNONS METHOD)



Looking for an engaging way to teach students how to multiply a 3 digit by a 2 digit number? You can start by playing to the creativity and imagination that students already have by turning those numbers into ideas that students can use whenever they encounter a mundane set of digits that they need to compute. In this post, I will show you each and every step you need to take to teach multiplication in a fun way. With the steps listed below, you will be able to confidently teach multiplication in class, but if you'd like a complete product that is already packaged with this information, the link will be provided at the end of the post.


STEP 1: SET UP YOUR NUMBERS IN THE CORRECT FORMAT

When multiplying a 3x2 digit number using the standard algorithm, you always want to have the most digits (3 digits) on the TOP and the least digits (2 digits) on the BOTTOM.



STEP 2: TURN YOUR DIGITS INTO CLOUDS AND CANNONS

Have students imagine that the most digits that are on the TOP are clouds (because clouds are in the air) and the least digits on the BOTTOM are cannons (because cannons travel on the ground). The point of having clouds and cannons as your digits is because when you multiply, the digits on the BOTTOM will have to interact with the digits on the TOP. They way you can have students imagine this is by telling them that each cannon will be firing on a cloud above in a specific sequence. The cannon firing or 'blast' is meant to symbolize MULTIPLICATION.




STEP 3: FOLLOW THE 1ST SEQUENCE OF CANNON TO CLOUDS

(Firing or blasting represents multiplying the 2 digits)

Any product that has 2 digits in it will be split. The right digit of the product will be placed above the cloud to the left and the right digit of the product will be dropped down (following the rules of addition).

  • The most right cannon will first fire onto the cloud directly above it (multiplying)

  • The most right cannon will next fire onto the cloud to the left of the previous (multiplying)

  • The most right cannon will then fire onto the cloud to the left of the previous (multiplying)



STEP 4: ADD IN YOUR 'STANDARD' ZERO ON THE SECOND ROW

After the most right cannon has fired onto all 3 clouds above it, and the products have been distributed accordingly, then add in a zero on the second row.



STEP 5: FOLLOW THE 2ND SEQUENCE OF CANNON TO CLOUDS

(Firing or blasting represents multiplying the 2 digits)

  • The left cannon will then fire onto the most right cloud (multiplying)

  • The left cannon will next fire onto the cloud to the left of the previous

  • The left cannon will then fire onto the cloud to the left of the previous



STEP 6: ADD UP THE PRODUCT OF ALL THE 'BLASTS'

  • Add up all the products of the 'blasts' following the standard additional algorithm



STEP 7: COUNT OVER THE DECIMALS (IF THERE ARE ANY)

  • If there are any decimals in your original starting numbers, count over how many times it takes to reach the decimal

  • Then, on your final answer, count over the same amount and add in the decimal
